We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and community of Payson Groff, whose passing at the age of 15 is an unimaginable loss. During this time of profound grief, we hold her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers and honor the bright and meaningful life she lived in her years here.
Payson Groff, born March 8, 2011, in Kankakee, Illinois, was a student at Herscher High School who carried within her a remarkable sense of purpose, curiosity, and determination far beyond her years. She dreamed boldly of attending Northwestern University and pursuing a future as a lawyer, a goal that reflected her ambition, intelligence, and desire to make a meaningful impact in the world.
Payson embraced life with energy and creativity. She was a loving older sister who took pride in her role within her large family. She enjoyed art, drawing, softball, and track, and found joy in simple moments like playing Fortnite, collecting Monster High dolls, and sharing laughter with friends. Her creative spirit also shone through in her TikTok cooking series, “Cooking with Good Looking,” created with her best friend Natalie—a reflection of her humor and imagination.
She loved the outdoors, fireworks, and traveling, especially to Panama City Beach, where she found happiness and peace. Deeply rooted in her faith, Payson was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was remembered as a devoted follower of Jesus.
Payson is survived by her parents, siblings, grandparents, extended family, and many close friends who cherished her deeply. She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Judy Arnold.
As arrangements are made for visitation and services at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home and Faith Baptist Church, her community gathers in remembrance. Though her life was far too short, Payson’s light, love, and dreams will continue to live on in all who knew her.
