George Dunn Ellsworth, ME Death, Obituary: Air Force Mechanic, Beloved Pilot, and Aviation Pioneer Dies

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and aviation community of George Dunn, whose passing marks the loss of a true pillar in Maine’s aviation history. His life was defined by service, craftsmanship, mentorship, and an enduring passion for flight that influenced generations.

Born and raised in Ellsworth, Maine, George Dunn was widely known as someone who could repair, build, and understand nearly anything mechanical. That natural talent led him into service with the United States Air Force, where he worked as an engine mechanic on the Convair B-36 Peacemaker, one of the most powerful aircraft of its era. His time in the military strengthened a lifelong dedication to aviation and technical excellence.

After his service, George’s passion for flight continued to grow in his civilian life. He kept and flew the first seaplane on Beech Hill Pond, a 1941 Taylorcraft, and went on to teach several of his children to fly floats. Aviation became a defining part of the Dunn family identity, passed down through generations. His son Jimmy fondly recalls early memories of flying in the aircraft’s luggage compartment while watching his brother learn to fly—moments that became part of a lasting family legacy.

George’s contributions to aviation were formally recognized in 2014 when he received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for more than 50 years of safe and dedicated flying. He was also a longtime participant in the Greenville Seaplane Fly-In, where he made history early on by winning the Bomb Drop Contest and later became part of the well-known “Flying Dunns” tradition.

Through decades of mentorship and enthusiasm, George helped shape Beech Hill Pond into a respected seaplane community, inspiring countless pilots along the way.

We honor his extraordinary life and extend our heartfelt sympathy to all who knew him. His legacy will continue to soar through the skies he so dearly loved.
