Dr. Edith Eger Budapest, Death, Obituary: Edith Eva Eger, Auschwitz Survivor and Renowned Psychologist, Dies at 98

With deep sadness, we mark the passing of Edith Eva Eger, an Auschwitz survivor whose life was a testament to resilience, courage, and healing. She died at the age of 98, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Edith was born on September 29, 1927, in Budapest, Hungary, into a Jewish family. She was the youngest daughter of Lajos and Ilona Elefánt. As a young girl, she excelled academically and artistically, attending gymnasium while also training as a ballet dancer. Her athletic talent led her to become a member of the Hungarian Olympic gymnastics team. However, her dreams were abruptly shattered in 1942 when anti-Jewish laws stripped her of that opportunity.

In March 1944, following the Nazi occupation of Hungary, Edith and her family were forced into the Kassa (Košice) ghetto. Just months later, they were deported to Auschwitz. Upon arrival, she was separated from her mother, who was sent to the gas chambers. Edith and her sister Magda endured unimaginable hardship, later being transferred to forced labor and transported under brutal conditions. In May 1945, they were liberated from Gunskirchen, a subcamp of Mauthausen.

After the war, Edith rebuilt her life in the United States. Refusing to be defined solely by her suffering, she pursued education and became a psychologist. She specialized in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, dedicating her life to helping others heal from trauma. Through her work, writing, and speaking, she shared her story as a powerful message of hope, resilience, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Edith Eva Eger’s life stands as a profound reminder of survival, compassion, and the possibility of finding meaning even after unimaginable loss.
